Information about NEN 9140:2024
NEN 9140 sets specific requirements for safe work on hybrid and electric vehicles by eliminating electrical hazards. Additionally, the standard provides guidelines for the safe storage of (suspected) damaged hybrid and electric vehicles and electrically hazardous parts of these vehicles.
With the rise of electric-powered vehicles (e-vehicles), new technologies bring new risks, such as dangerous electrical voltages that can cause severe damage and injury if handled improperly. The changes in the standard address the evolution of automotive workshops, where the arrival of e-vehicles has brought significant changes over the past five years. Especially working under voltage is a sensitive issue, where the revised standard more clearly indicates under what conditions this is allowed.
Key changes
The main changes are:
- An expanded scope for various types of electric vehicles.
- A new classification of electrical voltages, with Low Voltage (LV) Class A up to 60 volts and High Voltage (HV) Class B from 60 volts DC. For AC, the limit is 30 volts.
- The required qualification level for a Skilled Person (VP) has been raised to level 3.
- An updated flowchart that now follows the manufacturer's guidelines.
- An expanded chapter on working under voltage, with clearer training requirements.
- A renewed and expanded emergency response matrix.
